Price Check: Sunn 610L
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:51:20 am »
Just wondering what a going rate would be on a 600L, I know there was one on eBay not too long ago, but I forgot to watch the auction.

600L unloaded
600L loaded

Thanks

Aside from asking to include an idea of what condition the cabinet is in(which could affect the cost greatly), most people will say an item as worth as much as you(or whomever) are willing to pay for it. You can probably dig up some sort of price guide, but those typically land you paying more than you'd probably want to.

I know it's not the most helpful answer, but if this helps any, I picked up a 612S for $700. Did I pay too much?  Maybe.  Did I want it, and do I love it?  Definitely. So, I'm happy with the amount I paid.  I know I've heard of them going for $200, but I didn't get that streak of luck.

Yea, sorry, condition is good. I know it is worth what you are willing to pay, so dumb question kind of, I understand you. Just wondering what other people have paid for them. Thanks though. Got a pretty good price, so I will probably just bite the bullet

Most people are going to tell you that your best price guide as of right now is going to be Ebay/CL.  Prices fluctuate, as I'm sure you know.

Picked my 6x10S and Concert PA for $250.  Would have gladly paid more if I had had the money, but that's all he was asking and I wasn't going to tell him I'd pay more.  It just happened to fit my price range.  Right place, right time, right price.  I think I got pretty lucky.   :-D

My 610L was $100 and came with an Fender rackmount head, which I sold a few days later for $100.

I would say anywhere between that and $300 is a steal for any 6x Sunn, but depending on the condition I could see justifying one for $450.

So... If I had a 610 cab in good condition, would you buy it from me for $450?

Well, I already own two and have rehearsal space access to another 6x10S, so I would have to pass. sorry mang!

But yet, you would advise someone else to spend $450 for one?  :?

I could see justifying one for $450.

I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make.
What you or I personally think a certain piece of gear is worth is irrelevant. Unless you are willing to sell a piece for a specific price, or actually buy a piece for a specific price. I'm of the opinion that to offer a suggestion of how much someone else should pay when you won’t “put your money where your mouth is” is irresponsible, and usually inflationary.
The only accurate barometer is actual sale prices, not the opinion of any self styled "expert" on gear value.
I'm not dogging you specifically Paul of the Bastards. You may or may not have more experience than anyone else on the planet in buying and selling Sunn gear, but anything other than factual reporting of actual sale prices or offering a cash purchase price for a specific piece has no bearing whatsoever on what something is really worth.
If you were offering to sell the OP a 610 cab for $450, or had actually bought one from someone for $450, that would be relevant.
Here's an example;
I've bought and sold a fair amount of Sunn gear over the years, and I wouldn't pay more than a 100-150 bucks for a real nice 6X10. I have absolutely no personal use for one, and would have to factor in the cost of tying up the cash for however long it would take to sell it; advertising costs, etc., into my purchase price. On the other hand, I'll usually pay up for 2X15’s; I've paid over $600 for a JBL loaded 215 cab.
Does this mean a 6X10 is "worth" $100? Does it mean that a JBL 2X15 is "worth" $600+?
Only to me, not in the open market, and I think that if I spouted off that a 200S cab was worth $600 in response to someone asking “how much is a 200S cab worth”, or $100 for a 6X10 cab in response to an inquiry about 6X10 cabs, it would be irresponsible and accomplishing nothing but perhaps inducing them to either pay too much, or lose out on a “deal”.

So… I don’t do it. But, perhaps you have more vintage gear purchases/sales experience than I do.

RMR, ignore Ed. If you think it's a good deal, and it's only a few hundred, go for it.

There you go! That's close to the point I was trying to make.
If it's a few hundred or a few thousand is irrelevant, ultimately it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks unless they are actively involved in the transaction. What possible significance can the speculative opinion of some armchair quarterback, with no skin of their own in the game, have regarding the value of anything?
As I said, my post isn’t directed at anyone specifically, but IMO posting baseless fairytales in response to a "How much is it worth?" thread is irresponsible and generally inflationary.

And I'll call it every time I see it...

I surrender, Ed. You're too tough for me.

It’s not a case of winning or losing. My point is simply that speculating on the price of anything used is a wasted effort unless the value can be substantiated by actual transactions. Obviously there is no forum “rule” governing this type of speculation, but I always chime in when the speculation gets “fanciful” in my estimation.
Truthfully, what caught my attention was your suggestion that $450 was reasonable for a 610, with your only reference being one that you bought for net zero;

My 610L was $100 and came with an Fender rackmount head, which I sold a few days later for $100.

It’s a personal thing; A sizeable piece of the income I use to support my family comes from buying and selling items. Not just Sunn gear (IMO there isn’t nearly enough mainstream interest in the brand for me to make significant revenue); Sunn is more of a passion for me, but I deal almost exclusively from vintage items.
It's tough enough to negotiate in this economy; mythical market value speculation muddies the water even more.

I’ve deleted your recycle bin posts; the language was objectionable, and while a healthy debate can be stimulating, IMO profanity and name calling isn’t something that this forum is designed for.
Smite away, and if you want to take it to PM, that’s fine by me, I’m pretty thick skinned and feel pretty secure in my grasp of the vintage gear market. I actually enjoy the intellectual exercise.
But… vulgar, profane, personal assaults against anyone is not tolerated on any forums that I have visited.

Did not mean for people to get into it on here, but I appreciate all of the feedback.

I know price is all relative, I guess I was looking more for the "What would you pay?"

The one I was eyeing up was $300, looked almost new, never gigged, looks great. Original speakers, but at the time, I could not swing. Now I am in talks with the guy for $200, which is a little bit better on my budget. I appreciate all the comments, thanks guys.

I do feel like I am getting a steal, just could not quiet swing the $300 the other week. Originally we were trading, I have a Sunn 412 with Celestions, but he needed the money, so I am actually getting a better deal, excited for the addition.
