It sure looks like a 2000S to me, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay $150 for it with
no speakers in it. IMO that's a no-brainer.
The baffle looks strange, like it's been stained or refinished for some reason, like 60's era walnut wall paneling. That speaker looks like a stamped frame late 60's-mid 70's CTS. They were very common as the "standard" bass driver in a lot of MI enclosures, PA cabs, Leslies, and I'm pretty sure the majority of Ampeg Portaflex's. They are really a pretty nice, versatile driver; not high end like the JBL, Altec, Gauss, Cerwin Vega, etc. of the day, but certainly not "junk" by any means.
As far as I know, however, they were never available in a 2000S cab. I think the JBL D140F was the
only driver offered in a 2000S from the factory.
But...
Here's the strange thing. Your cab is the
fourth one I've seen loaded with them. I've pulled them from three 2000S cabs; one from Miami FL, one from Cleveland OH, and one from Burbank CA. The one from Miami only had one speaker; like yours, the Burbank and Cleveland cabs each had a pair. The Cleveland cab had stickers on the drivers from a music store, so I suspected that the CTS's were used to replace blown JBL's. The CTS drivers were probably significantly less expensive than a recone on a D140, so this may well be the explanation for
all of these cabs, but it's an interesting coincidence that four 2000S cabs from such widely varied sources would have the same drivers.
I still have some of the pull outs, if you want one we could probably work out something, but that cab is just
begging for a pair of AlNiCo JBL's!
