Sunn PA speakers in a guitar cab?
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:07:56 pm »
Just wondering if speakers originally coming from a PA column cabinet would sound alright in a 3x12 cab?  I have the opportunity to pick up some Sunn 12" PA speakers and wanted to throw them in a cab.

Would these sound any different then regular speakers?

Sunn PA drivers work fine in my Sceptre cabinet.

I used Free Traynor (Marslands) speakers from a PA cab (originally with a horn) to build a 2x12 Fender Pro Jr Total Monster combo amp built from a cut down 2x12 bassman cabinet from the 70's. It sounds great and all my friends with expensive tube combo's said I got it right tone wise. Maybe luck, deep cabinet, lotsa bass. Use em they are likely to sound good. Ever take many speakers apart? they are  all quite similar more similar than different. Yes there can be major differences in sound but its all relative to taste and when you're cranked up with your favorite pedal it doesn't seem to matter. Its the player mostly that'll make it sound good. Give a drummer a pair of sticks and a cardboard box and you'll soon know if he/she is any good. Note that speakers from a ported cab may not work well in a closed cab or vica versa. Who really knows for sure here will likely speak up.
Bands currently. For Fox Sake (Lead Guitar) Aces High (5 string Bass) Zoot Suit Riot (Tenor Sax) Miles to Midnight (Fretless jazz bass) Rockfish (5 string bass) Spent Youth (5 string bass) Tried as Adults (5 string bass)

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine that the drivers are the same. Tranducers weren't as application specific in the olden days.

My first "big" amp was an Epiphone Futura, like a Fender Super Reverb.  The amp blew taking out the four 10 inch speakers along with it.  I still couldn't afford the Sunn I wanted so I ordered 2 - 12 inch Sunn speakers and made a new baffle board for the amp.  My Drummer was running the store in the evenings and in my impatience to get my speakers I insisted he give me a pair of 12s I saw in the back room.  A few weeks later he told me my speakers came in and that what I had taken were replacements for a PA Column.  I already had them in my amp and was afraid the owner would be upset so I just kept them even though they cost less than what I had paid for.  They sounded fine to me but when I saw the Guitar Speakers the magnets were bigger and they were rated at a higher wattage so I regretted my impatience!    I don't know what PA they went to because I remember the Aluminum Dust caps were smaller than what is in my 412SR Columns.
