100S Cabs

Hello, I have been searching for a 100s cab with the single 15 & horn for
months and have yet to see one for sale. Is this a lost cause? Why do they
seem to be that  rare? Also is there anyone out there that has a ported 2x15
bass cab that measures 42h x 26w x 18d. Bought one last summer and can't
figure out what head it was intended for.

Regarding the 100s cab, you might be able to find one but I'd say that would be a pretty rare find.  I wanna say that sunn made less initially but I'd also say that they were probably less popular too.  Not many guys are looking for 15's for guitar.  The heads have done pretty well but most guys probably pair them up with a different 412 cab or something.

Anyway, keep scouring and you can find one eventually but you just have to be patient...and or have some money to make a move.  What's really frustrating is when one of the pieces you want comes up but is just beyond what you want to pay.  Good luck with the search.

The second cab sounds kind of like a 2000s to me but without a pic its kind of hard to say.

   Hi there,I think the cab in qusetion is a 200 S cab,I believe the 2000 cab is 48" tall,the 42" goes with the 200,Mel.

Hi Mel, This cab is 2 inches wider and 3 inches deeper then my 200s cab.
It may have been intended for a 200s, I don't think it's for a 2000s because
that head hangs over the edge 2 inches on each side. It's loaded with Sunn
1516 Magnas if I remember correctly.

I'm don't claim to know everthing regarding Sunn gear, but I have no knowledge of a conventional Sunn ported 2x15 with those dimensions. I really don't have any experience with them, but I think the 215SH folded horn was about those dimensions.
However that is pretty obviously a non conventionally ported 2x15. On the exterior it looks like it's just a port, the drivers themselves aren't really visible.
Is that the cab in question?

The 42" high ported cabs (with casters) measure 24" wide and 15" deep. To my knowledge, there are three vintage ported 2x15 Cabs with those dimensions.

200S; horizontal port running the width of the cab between the drivers.
Sorado; two circular ports in the middle towards the outside.
215S; vertical divided port running the entire baffle to the right of the drivers.

The 200S and Sorado cabs came with the corresponding head, and the 215S was "ala carte". If it is the 215SH, it was also available without a specified amp. As Mel stated, the 2000S cabs were 48" tall; and 30" wide to match the width of the 2000S amp.

I don't know much the later Sunn/Fender cabs. If it's one on them, I'm of zero help!

My guess is this cab is from the early 70s. It has the circular ports and is
the same height as the 200s cab , but wider and deeper. It also has two handles
on it unlike the one handle on my 200s cab.

The 215SH is listed as being 42.5 x 26 x 18 in the 74 and 75 catalogs. Like Ed said it's a folded horn type cabinet. In the 1979 catalog the 215RH is the same type cabinet but the dimensions are 45 x 27 x 21. I don't have any data for the years 71, 73, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 83, and 85.
 
What type grill cloth, speaker jack and Sunn badge does the cabinet have? Is the back removable?

Although I agree with the comments by Edbass and Loudthud regarding the dimensions - based on what I know firsthand to be true - several months ago I came across a 215 here in St. Louis answering tryalskid's dimensions.  I posted the info and photos on the forum but no one knew anything about it.

I have two 1971 215 cabs with the 42x24x15 dimensions, for awhile owned a 215SH that was 42x26x18 (and a 415M cabinet with those dimensions), but this guy had a 215 that was 42x26x18 yet had a front panel like my older cabs - round ports on each side (center) with the two speakers stacked in the center.  Silver grill cloth, in the photos it looked like the back was sealed.  All I know is he eventually sold it.

It's a closed back cab with one 1/4 jack. Has the same sunn logo as my 67 100s &
69 200s, with the same fender like silver & black grill cloth, vertical like sunns. It
dosn't look like there was model plate mounted by the speaker jack ever. I'm probally
the one he sold it to because St Louis is where I picked it up.

The music store I worked at in the early 70's had sold ten or so 100S cabinets.  Alot of guitar players loved the 15" JBLs and they are one of my favorites today.  But the 100S only had One 15 and the LE-100 Horn where most other amps of that type had two 15s.  That combination with the Horn was just to bright and was missing the fullness of two 15s.  Most of the cabs came back and the horns were pulled, baffle was cut and another 15" JBL was installed.  I remember looking at the wall over the repairmans bench and there were at least 8 or 10 horns hanging there for years.  I have a 100S cab that someone has cut another 15 into the baffle board.  You can just see on the edge of the speaker hole the corner of the horn opening.  It also only has the folded horn port like the 200S over the bottom speaker.

Well, I'm stymied! It sounds like some sort of oversized Sorado cab. I wonder if it's something else that someone grilled and badged to match other Sunn gear; does it have the same tolex as your 200S cab?
Could you post some pics of it next to your 200S cab?

I wondered something similar, Edbass, that maybe it originally was a 415 (same box size) converted to the earlier style 215 using the front plywood from an earlier cabinet, or a home-made replica. When I saw the photos from the St. Louis Craiglist posting, the woodwork looked just a bit rough.

Thanks Guys I never considered the fact that it might have been violated. I
think you are correct and it is a 415M that someone changed to a 2x15. If
I'm successful in loading the photos you will be able to see how rough the
front plywood is and that the circle cutout for the port isn't perfectly round.
It also has Magna 1516s,the same speakers that came with the 415M.

Based on those pics, I'd say that CLD nailed it. It appears like someone thought the 415 had a couple too many 15's and fired up the table saw!
It's sort of between a 200S and 2000S cab in volume, and IMO looks pretty good with that 200S on top; how's it sound?
