Thanks everyone!

We got the 100S back just over a week ago, and it sounds amazing!!! I nearly gave myself a heart attack when I played the first note, with the volume only at 5.

5 ??  OMG,  I was playing my Solarus a couple nights ago and on a whim turned it up to 3 and thought my ears were going to bleed.
In fourty years that amp has never been past 6 and that was strictly about a  20 second experiment.  Even when I was gigging with it I don't ever remember turning up past 3-1/2 - 4  and that was an outside gig (noisy pool party).  And that's the 40 watt, EL34 version.
I don't know,  maybe I'm just a volume sissy, but....be careful with your hearing....when it's gone it's gone.

[ I'm on the lookout for some replacement knobs, if anybody knows where to get some.

Not to plug for EvilBay, but I noticed these are available http://cgi.ebay.com/Music-Man-Amp-Knob-Sunn-and-Mesa-Boogie_W0QQitemZ230441824711QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a76731c7

The seller of the knobs is a guy namd Dave Kipka.  I've purchsed two sets from him.. The knobs are new, with the set screws, and are fantastic.  I believe he got them from Rogan, the OEM for Sunn knobs.

He has two styles....the Mesa boogie/ Music man are the larger font, and the Sunn style are the smaller font.

Thanks for the heads up my man. Think I'm going to finally snag these today.

Ha!! I always wear ear plugs these days, and need them even more so now that I have TONS of raw Sunn power in the studio. Hells yeah!

Biltmore,

Let me know how you like the knobs.  Make sure you tell Dave that you want the small font knobs.

I have a Sceptre with leaning transformers and I am pretty much convinced these days that they get the lean when someone is carrying the arp and they crash the end into a doorway or something solid.  The transformers "try to go through the windshield" but alas, those tabs hold them in place but get bent in the process.  They usually lean the same way because it was that one crash that did it.

If the weight of the transformer was enough to bend those tabs if the amp was on its end, those tabs would be breaking off all over the place.

I can't remember where, but I've read somewhere that one of the complaints about Sunn (along with "too clean") that the Hendrix camp had was that the transformers kept breaking loose on their Sunn gear during transit. I think I also read where Sunn was getting a little tired of their amps coming back skewered by Stratocaster necks.
I'll look around and try to find the quotes.

When I purchased my 200's (which I no longer have, but am on the look out for) back in 72.There where wooded blocks (approx. 1.5" x 1.5") above the transformers that kept them in place and would prevent the brackets from bending while in transit.

In an attempt to get this thread back to its original theme, just wanted to share my joy at finding a complete 1970 200S rig ...

a) for sale with an asking price of $400.
b) for sale by the original owner, who bought it from a large local Sunn dealer (Ye Olde Music Shop) who also provided sound for the popular Mississippi River Festival and went on to run sound for the Who.
c) the original D140s look and sound great; he said the cabinet has never been opened.
d) the amp fizzled out when he powered it up after 10+ years of inactivity but hey my Sorado did that in the late '90s when I rescued it from a similar period of neglect.
e) the guy who sold it to me was a very successful B3 player (he used the 200S for the bass pedals, with TWO Leslies handling everything else) in the '70s and '80s.  Nowadays he plays the Wurlitzers and other really cool organs in old restored movie theaters. Neat older guy with plenty of stories.

Picked up the rig yesterday and dropped of the amp at my tech this afternoon.  Photos attached.

:-D

FWIW, here's the cleaned-up 200S with new grill cloth from Conrad. The head is back from the shop, with a nifty solution to the can-cap problem along with new tubes. All in all, I put another $400 in it but feel like I'm still ahead, and hoo boy does it sound nice!  8-)

Sunn since June 1971!

It looks like it's on a shop display. But for some scratches and lack of a price tag, I would be sure 200S is back in production. Good work! And "what a score", of course...
