215 cab
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:22:08 pm »
did Sunn make a 215 cab specifically for guitar?  or were they just non-specific, whatever you wanted to use it for?  I got a guy who just bought my silverface concert lead who has a 215 that he says the previous owner told him it was a guitar cab.  sorry for the long story but I want a 215 cab, I want to convince him to sell me his 215 cab, that it is no good for guitar only for bass.

just wasn't sure if they made specific cabs in the day

I know the 100S originally came with a 1x15" cabinet with a horn, but a 2x15" cab seems like a bass cab to me.

Any Sunn 2x15 cabinet that is only 11 1/2 inches deep was originally for guitar. Assuming it still has the original JBL D130F or D15 speakers. Additionally there were 15 inch deep 200S type cabinets that were sold with D130s or D15s and those can be used for guitar. Check the thread below for an easy way to tell what speakers are in the cabinet without having to remove all the screws from the back.

The Sunn Sonic II cab was 40H x 24W x 15D and was, as advertise in the 67 catalog, a rear loading folded horn cab with two JBL D130F speakers.  As far as I know, the 200S bass cab was the same except it had JBL D140F bass speakers.

The shorter Sentura I / II cabs ( 36H x 24W x 11.5 D) were for guitar.  The Sentura I cab had one JBL D-130F and the Sentura II had 2 JBL D-130F's

I played in a band a few years ago with a guy who had a 1000S with two cabinets. The cabinets, which came with the amp originally, each have two JBL D130-F drivers. Pristine condition, sounds awesome.

So yes, Sunn did make 2x15" cabinets for guitar.

Hi,

My Sunn 2 x 15 cabinet has two Sunn Guitar Transducers and no slanted baffles. It has a single, partial-width baffle that extends straight to the back, and two ports that are no more than rolled cardboard tubes.

The back screws into the baffle as well as around the perimeter. Dimensions are the same as the 100S/200S: 42 x 24 x15 inches. Not sure what it is, but it bears no resemblance to the 2000S cabinets I used to use in the '60's and '70's.

Anyone know for sure what I have?

There's a post on this site. A quick look through would get you a lot of information about what and when.

Take a look at: http://sunn.ampage.org/sdp/index.php/topic,4178.0.html

It's actually at the top of the page where this post is.

Jeff, I think you have a Sorado cabinet. See this thread: http://sunn.ampage.org/sdp/index.php/topic,4614.0.html

The 1000S cab had 2 JBL D-130s & the same JBL LE-100 Horn that the 100S Cabinet had.  I have a 1000S cab and it looks the same as a 2000S cab except the top speaker is off-set to the left to make room for the horn.  I just checked the pic in the 1968 catalog for the 1000s and the speakers are not off-set.  My guess is they used 2000S cabs for the photo.  There is not room for the horn unless the speaker is off-set.

Just to add confusion on the subject, I have two 215 cabs from 1971 that are both 15" deep. The one Quigley Music paired with my Sorado and sold me in 1971 has "guitar transducers" in it. The other cab, which I found a couple of years ago, has "bass transducers" in it.  Both sound equally great with bass.

Here are photos of the two cabs; you can see the construction is the same.

I think those are both Sorado cabs, and that the speakers are the same CTS woofers, just labeled differently. I don't think the labeling process was too carefully monitored sometimes. I have a factory Sceptre cab that the "Guitar Tranducer" labels are all put on 45 degrees off center; kind of like a bored assembler did it for amusement.
Maybe they just ran out of "Bass Transducer" labels the day they made your first cab.

Thanks, Guys,

Sorado cabinet sure looks right.

I'm picking up my 200S head from the local service guy tomorrow. I'll take some shots and let you know how it sounds.

Still looking for a photo or two or a sketch of the 200S cabinet innards. I plan to build a pair ASAP.

This site is extremely helpful. Thanks to all of you.

Although I couldn't find manufacturer codes on the "guitar" speakers, the "bass" speakers are clearly marked Eminence (67).
