1968 coliseum p.a. head---the real deal
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:11:31 am »
i have a 1968 coliseum p.a. head that i would like to sell to raise money for a guitar purchase.

the amp is very, very clean and very, very loud---yes, you can sound like leslie west with this amp no sweat, especially through a sceptre 4x12.

it is missing the back panel, other than that the box and chassis are mint.
however, at some point in it's life someone scratched the serial number just below
the "coliseum p.a." name next to the standby switch.

original transformers and still running 2 rectifier tubes as it was built to do.
jj kt-88 power tubes.
i added a heavy-duty 3-prong cord for safety purposes.
i've had super basses, super leads, v4's etc., etc., and this amp obliterates them all
for sheer, mind-crushing volume---and the tone's pretty bitchin', too.

face it, to most sunn fans the coliseum p.a. head is more of a myth than a reality,
a truly rare animal, but here's a big, fat real one just waiting to go to somebody...why not you?

asking $1100.

Where are you located, and would you ship to Canada?

Ugh, so tempting.

i'm a hapless dork when it comes to computer events, i.e., posting pictures, but i can have a buddy help me get some together if you want.

it truly is as clean as i claim it to be.

by "done and done" are you thinking you're going to go ahead and grab it if you like what you see?

the one mod i did have done to it (completely reversible)---and i will have that done for you if you choose to---is i had a rotary ohm selector installed in one of the speaker jacks so that the amp is usable in 4, 8, and 16 ohm modes allowing maximum flexibility with cabinet choices.

i will work on getting pictures together.

I'd say it's pretty likely. Would it be easier to send them to my email? Or is it the taking of pictures that's an issue?

the actual picture taking.

i'm going to try and use this as a reason to finally go grab a simple digital camera
for just this kind of thing.

might take me a day or two to get it together.

it'd probably be easier to send them to your email.

dude, something went weird in the coliseum head today so i'm lugging it up to my tech to see what the deal is.

it's a strange, almost scratching-type sound that seems to occur randomly.
i guess it could fall under the category of some kind of short, but i don't have enough info at the moment to say for certain.

i will let you know when i know more myself.

take care.

Could be a bad preamp tube.  :?

my bad biltmore for not describing the amp's troubles clearly enough.

the weird "scratchy" noise only happens when i strike a chord or sustain a long note.
it's almost as if something becomes overpowered momentarily and a blast of stray signal gets loose causing this odd electric scratch sound---maybe an unpleasant
"static" sound is a better way to describe it.
it happens suddenly and then is gone, but it's bad enough to be very distracting and render the amp useless for recording.

i'm no tech, but i've been playing in loud, loud bands for a long time and have dealt with many a bad preamp tube and this just seems to be something else.

hopefully my tech friend will be able to suss it out and get rid of it.
