Grill Cloth
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:52:57 am »
I am looking for a quantity of 1967-type grill cloth Sunn used on the 200S, sufficient to re-cloth both the head and cabinet.  Mellotone originally supplied it to Sunn, but no longer makes that specific weave.  Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Iain McLennon

The old style grill cloth is like the holy grail, the subject comes up every so often but never gets fruitful results. As far as I know there is nowhere to get it new, I think the only chance is if someone is hoarding some NOS either intentionally or otherwise.
I spoke with Wendell Fabrics (who manufacture Mellotone) about re manufacturing some, and was told that due to EPA regulations that old style cloth can no longer be produced in the US; some chemical or material used in it's production is banned.

He also told me that I wasn't the first inquiry about it!

Traynor grill cloth is almost exactly like the old Sunn cloth.

From the website: http://www.traynoramps.com/products.asp?id=409&cat=19&type=12

Parts for the Traynor YGM3 Re-issue were sourced from the original suppliers and built to the original design specifications wherever possible. The paper bobbin transformers were recreated for the YGM3 by Hammond Canada, a source for Traynor parts since the '60s. Premium polypropylene capacitors, Switchcraft jacks and Accutronics reverb tanks are used today, just as they were in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The original supplier even painstakingly recreated the unique grille cloth used on the original YGM3 for the re-issue.

Some Traynor collectors tried to order some a while back but were told Traynor didn't order any extra. I haven't seen one of these amps to know how close the grill cloth is to the original.
