Help me identify this Sunn 4x12" cab
« on: April 28, 2010, 05:28:41 am »
Hi everybody. First post here! Finally I got my first Sunn cabinet!!
I got it from a local guy here in Greece (Europe) and it’s in an amazing condition!! No scratches no tears in grill cloth an of course the speakers are great too.
I wasn’t able to find more info about the cab (year made, watts, speaker types etc) that’s why I need your help guys… Here are two pictures of the cab (in pair with my Sovtek Mig 50). Any info would be grat! Thanks in advance….

Sunn Sceptre 4x12, most likely. Late 60s/early 70s.

Sunn Sceptre 4x12, most likely. Late 60s/early 70s.

I think the Sceptre was the only tall 412 Sunn made, and it was in response to the popularity of Marshall, Hiwatt, etc. 4X12 cabs in rock music at the time. Probably out of convenience they just took the existing 40X24X15 box and put in 12's in a sealed cabinet. Here's a '70 complete with the proper head.

Hey guys thanks a lot for your answers! The cab is amazing and I thought it was from a newer period.
From a quick search I couldn’t find any info on how many watts it is rated. Any ideas??

Definitely before the trademark "R".

So what does that mean?? That is probably from the late 60s rather than 70s??
Excuse my ignorance but I’m pretty new in SUNN equipment… :-)

If it has the original AlNiCo "Sunn Transducer" 12's, probably not very much. I don't know the actual rating, but the motor structure isn't real robust; based on looking at them I would guess maybe +/- 20 watts each?

I think the trademark was added for the 1969 model year, which would mean that your Sceptre cab is likely a 1968 if it doesn't have the "R" (I can't tell for sure by your photos, but it doesn't look like your cab has the trademark).
A lot of old Sunn cabs were dated inside with a grease pencil, if you open it up you might find out for sure.

The (R) badge and fender style grill cloth appeared around mid 1969. There was some crossover where an amp or cab might have the new badge and old grill cloth or vice versa. The badge on this cab is different though. Check the picture in this thread: http://sunnforum.ampage.org/sdp/index.php/topic,4099.0.html

There are two non-(R) badges and I think the one on this cab is the earlier one, from 1967 before the Sceptre was made. The badge on this cab looks like it's smaller than the #3 badge in the photo I posted. Please check the dimensions.

So I would guess that the grill cloth has been replaced on this cab, and/or the logo has been replaced.

Hello again! Thanks again for your info!
I'm back and I have pix :-D
Unfortunately I couldn't find a date stamp inside the cab. But anyways I took some pictures of the speakers and the whole inside.
Hope these will "tell" us (you actually....) more!!

p.s. they weren't any signs that something have changed!! :|

It all looks original to me, and in better condition than my Sceptre cabinet!

I second that, & as far as wattage handling is concerned, Ed probably has it pretty close...Sceptre heads were rated at 60 watts RMS (80 W after the ss rectifier), & the cabs were probably just enough to handle that clean output.

Thanks once again guys!!
The cab is awesome and has a sweet low end. The speakers have a nice voicing and the cab plays loud enough even the low wattage…
Sounds amazing with my Sound City 50 as well. Unfortunately I don’t own any Sunn amps  (at the moment..) cause it’s pretty difficult to find one in Greece and Europe in general. It would be great though if I had a sceptre head (like the one mr EdBass has posted!!)

I'm thinking of selling mine. It's just taking up room that I can't afford.
