Downsizing suggestions(2 612s' > 2 4x12's)
« on: August 26, 2010, 07:43:18 am »
So, Here's my issue: I have two 612S cabinets that I love more than anything.  They sound fantastic, and might be the only cabinets I'm happy playing through.  Problem is, they're damn heavy to cart around, and the casters had to be removed, as they weren't really making transportation any simpler.

This gave way to my wondering whether or not there was a suitable square 4x12 cabinet(from the same era) that Sunn might have made with the same design principles(not necessarily with the 90 degree baffle, but similar in tone)? I have a 412L, but it's definitely not of the same breed.

If not Sunn, can someone possibly recommend another company?  I've thought about contact Verellen or Emperor, but I'd really prefer finding someone to trade the cabinet with, if it were to come to that.

Pics enclosed.

Thanks!

Ever though about building you own?  Figure out the volume of the 6 x 12 cabinet is and go from there to estimate what you would need in a 4 x 12.  Here's another thought;  why not build four 2 x 12 cabs, use 8 ohm speakers wired in series for a 16 ohm load per cabinet.  For each cab have two input jacks wired in parellel.  Two cabs would be 8 Ohms, Three cabs would be 5.33 ohms and four cabs would be 4 ohms.  If the amp goes a low as a 2 ohm load, you could run 8 of those cabs, sixteen 12 " speakers.  I think hauling 2 x 12 cabs would be easier than 4 x 12's

I'd love to be in a position to build my own cabinets, but I'm about to start school full-time. Pile that onto having a band, girlfriend, and a job, and that takes away from the option.  Down the road I would definitely love to, though.  It would simply be a matter of space, and a million questions for everyone on this forum. :)

Well, I was going to suggest figuring out all the dimension of the cab if you were to remove the top two 12s, leaving you with the bottom 4x12s, and then custom building off of that. However, possibly Emperor or Verrellen could do this. Essentially take the existing 6x12 design, and simply remove a pair of twelves and the area they take up, leaving you with a 4x12, which would just be a proportionally sized down version of the 6x12 theoretically. I'm sure it'd be simple enough for either of those companies.

Why distroy a perfectly good SUNN cabinet?  It would make more sense to either buy a 4 x 12 cab or build one.  I'm sure that 6 x 12 could be sold for some good money.

I would never cut them.  I think DMN was saying so in terms of figuring out the cabinet's internal volume if it were built as a 4x12, and having it built(or building it myself) to those specifications.

All in all, very tempting(minus actually altering the 612S cabs, of course).

HRobert, the multiple 2x12 suggestion is interesting, but I think 4x12s are a more realistic option.

If I can make it to the show here in Montreal, I could save you half the load on your way back by exchanging one 6x12 for my 2x12(with brand new Emi Wizard)+$...

I won't see 612 passing by close to my place that often...! :-o

I think you definately need to try some different 4x12s. The 412L could have completely different speakers in it. What is it you don't like about the 412L? Too much bass, too thin sounding, sounds like bees in a bag?

Definitely a bit too bass-y.  I like a nice buzzing mid in my cabinet, but the 412L doesn't really give me that.  It sounds beautiful, just not the sound I look for in the band I play in.

Oh no, I would NEVER suggest cutting up a Sunn. Exactly, I was suggesting getting the dimensions and having a new one built, sans the area required for the extra 2x12s. Are these cabs the same design as the 4x15s, just with six twelves? Because someone (HRobert?) posted a diagram for those recently.
