For sale: Red knob SUNN Model T
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:23:01 pm »
Hello all,

I have a SUNN Model T in awesome condition that I will eventually sell locally in Montreal, Canada. I just registered to this board in order to post this add before I advertise it locally, since these amps are getting pretty hard to find. I tough maybe someone on this board is living in or near Montreal and looking for a vintage Model T. I don't plan on shipping this monster as it weighs a ton.

The amplifier is in great cosmetic condition except for 2 very small tears in the tolex on the front (as can be seen on the pictures). Functionally, it is in perfect condition. All the supply electrolytic capacitors were recently replaced with capacitor identical in value and form factor as the original ones (for instance the Sprague Atom 20uf@600V caps and the dual 100/100uf@525V multicap -- the big metal "can"). Also, all tubes are brand new: the three preamp tubes are Electro-Harmonix 12AX7, and the four power tubes are matched Sovtek 6550. I am asking $1400 for the amplifier.

Anyway, for more information or to get specific pictures, don't hesitate to contact me via email.

Thanks,

Francois

Those are not the original knobs, correct?

As far as I know these are the original knobs. I bought the amp from the original buyer maybe 10 years ago. I did some research on google and all 2nd generation Model T I found had the same knobs. What make you think they are not original? I'm curious.

So tempting.  I'm gonna be up in MTL next weekend to play. Are you looking for cash only, or would you be willing to trade as well?

'Zounds! I'll have to think about it.  It's hard to hide an amp from your girlfriend, without her killing you. :p

I can buy this with CASH! I understand that you aren't interested in shipping, but I WILL PAY FOR ALL OF IT!!! I live in Houston, Texas and I understand that it is difficult to send something like this. But I can't begin to describe how long I've waited for one of these. Are you interested in?

I guess I thought that the red knob model Ts had the same looking knobs as the first gen model Ts, only red, but it looks like they're different.

I've got to say that is the cleanest looking control plate of any 70s model T I've ever seen.  Usually the text is worn, especially around the power/stand by switches and the input jacks.

The 2nd gen I have has the Rogan 0-10 knobs like the 1st gen but with red inserts in the center. Those knobs are held on by a set screw between the 0 and the 10. The knobs on this amp look like push-ons. Kinda like the knobs used on Gibson guitars. They usually require a split shaft or Nylon shaft pot.

Usually if you attempt to clean the front panel with alcohol or even soap and water the black starts to rub off.  :-(

Yeah, these knobs don't have the "grip grooves" on the shafts, and the text looks a lot different than I've seen on other 2nd gen model Ts.  So the second gen knobs are identical to the first gen, just red instead of silver? That's what I thought.

With the labels on the control plate, the same thing goes for the top of the chassis. I made that mistake, the labels on the tubes, transformers, and such comes off VERY EASILY with any scrubbing.

Out of curiosity, I did a little search in Google images and found out a few other 2nd generation Model T amps with the same knobs as mine has (without "grip grooves"). It looks like SUNN changed the knobs of 2nd gen Model T amplifiers on later versions. Attached are two of the pictures I found (no better resolution pictures were available).

I'm sorry but I have a question about the large capacitor, or has you find? I have to change on my sunn and I found none.

Thank you for your help

Hello,

Antique Electronic Supply has the perfect capacitors for the Model T. Exact same value, look, and shape.

For the big external metal can that contains two 500V 100uF electrolytic caps, I used their part number C-EC100-100-500. These are made to the same specs as the Original Mallory caps; its a perfect fit. For the 2 blue electrolytic caps that are inside the chassis, I used the Sprague Atom C-SA20-600.

Hope it helps!

By the way, the amp is not available for sale anymore. Maybe I should remove this thread.
