New Old Stock Amps and Cabs
« on: December 05, 2010, 01:51:29 pm »
(edit: the details, as revealed later in this thread)

2000S and a 2x15 cab with JBL's new in the box, unopened ($5,000)
2000S and a 2x15 cab with JBL's new with covers but out of box ($3,500)
Coliseum Lead Head new but out of box SOLD ($995)
4x15 cab with cover, new but out of box" ($unknown)
Rock & Roll Vintage in Chicago

(now on to the original post)

I was talking with an acquaintance yesterday who works at a vintage guitar store here in Chicago, and he was telling me about a handful of old Sunn amps that they recently acquired and are preparing to sell.  All are new old stock, never owned.  There's a 2000s w/ 2x15 JBL cab (both items still in the original boxes), another 2000s w/ 2x15 JBL cab w/ no boxes, and a Model T.  I'm not sure if there's more, or what else there might be.  He said the Model T blew a couple tubes when they tried it, and their tech later revealed that it was incorrectly wired at the factory (maybe that's why it never sold?).  So, who knows what the internals are like on these, but I can only assume they are mint externally (I haven't seen them myself).  I know the boxed set is going to be priced for crazy dollars, but I figured you hardcore collectors out there might be interested.  I'll post more info as this stuff becomes available if there is any interest here.

I read about this on another forum and I think they were going to ask $4500 for the in box 2000s.

Then the people of that board went on to say how that store is a rip of anyway....  Still pretty neat to have a brand new never used 2000s.

The shop is Rock and Roll Vintage in Chicago.  They posted a craigslist ad today, which seems to indicate that the Sunn stuff is available.  Good luck.  I'd love to see pics or at least learn the prices, if anybody gets that far.

I do have a Model T second generation that still has the hang tags on it. It was sent by fender to a rental place in chicago for a kenny loggins concert. But he didnt like the amp. So it wasnt used. The box says fender on it. So i doubt if it is the original box. They said that is the way fender sent it to them.
I would consider selling it.

Kenny Loggins?  AMAZING.  I love the thought of a Model T ripping out Danger Zone.

Their prices are often pretty stiff, but I may call them tomorrow. Will let you know if I learn anything.

Anyone visited this store?  I've been to Chicago Music Exchange not far from R&RV's location. Rent's not cheap in that part of town.

First of all, the Craigslist ad has the wrong phone number: It should say 773-878-8616.

They had a Model T but it's already sold; they still have a Coliseum Lead but I didn't ask about it.

They have two 2000S rigs (one head + one cab each), one in original boxes and the other one with the vinyl covers. They are asking $5,000 for the NIB rig and $3,500 for the other one.  If I were rich enough to buy even one of them, I certainly would.

R&R Vintage bought these and several other items from a guy who had a music store and then closed it in the mid-1970s, putting everything into storage.

Here's the response I got from the guy I know who works there - which also mentions a 4x15 cab:

"We have the following...
2000S and a 2x15 cab with JBL's new in the box, unopened ($5,000)
2000S and a 2x15 cab with JBL's new with covers but out of box ($3,500)

Edit:  (edit: added prices for clarity)

I just edited my original post to include the list of items for sale and their prices, and I'll keep that updated if I find out the price for the 415 or if anything sells that I know of.

Well, grabbing a brand new Coliseum Lead would certainly make me feel kinda Entwistle-like.
Even if IMHO $1000 is a bit of a stretch for me to accomplish that feeling. Though certainly not unreasonable.

Am I the only one who finds appealing and very charming a second hand (or third or fourth…) amplifier with all the history that carries???
Of course it’s a BIG deal to find a “never removed from box Sunn” but just saying…
