Different Sunn Port designs?...Conrad?
« on: September 25, 1999, 07:59:00 pm »
There seem to be two basic port designs used in Sunn bass cabinets before the curved folded horn designs. My Sunn cabinets have flared ports that get larger as the port reaches the front baffle, where the design Conrad showed us had the port as the smallest part of a "reverse" horn.
Can anyone explain these two designs and why it was changed. Also, what frequencies - an speakers were these designs optimized for?
Thanks,

Tom

I believe the cabinets were loaded with 81-0145 speakers. 2" coil 54ounce magnet. These speakers had very stiff spiders & surrounds. Free air resonance was about 50Hz so a large cabinet was needed to extend the low end. They produced very tight bass. Both eminence and MTX produced similar speakers and the prior was a vendor while the speaker plant was moved from Williamston to Tualatin.

The original 200s design had the reverse horn design with the smaller opening at the exit of the port.  The cabinet was designed for the original D140F by JBL.  The D130F was also used in this cabinet.  The change in horn design was done after I left the company so I'm not sure why it was done.

Conrad, can you please tell me about the 215RH bass cabinet I used to own? It was a right hand discharge folded horn type of enclosure, but I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking. It had a very unique sound.
