Sunn 10" squareback speakers
« on: December 18, 2010, 10:04:47 am »
Hi, my name is Ron. I am a longtime member of the Dean Guitars Forum, same user name, but I have always loved the Beta Lead 212 combo. I also am a player of Gibson e/2 Explorer's but always have a Dean stashed somewhere

Missed a few Beta Lead combo's on eBay but always looking for a working model

I pose this question to those more knowledgeable in all things Sunn.... I bought a Concert Series Monitor w/ 2 squareback 10" speakers, treeter and ported enclosure. I wondered what they handled and what ohms they are. Ceramic or alnico. Possibly who manufactured them? They weigh almost 3 lbs each. Could they work as replacements for 10" amp speakers. I actually ran it of my 120w tube Vypyr and they sounded great (I did not take the amp past 2 for fear of smoking them) even in the ported enclosure. Tweeter works also

I am guessing this is an early 80s model but the speaker codes are difficult to find info on. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Just wanted to say I like the look of this board, very informative and I hope to contribute

Thanks in advance

Happy Holidays!

There's no reason they wouldn't work as guitar speakers, as long as you like the way they sound. Disconnect the tweeter, though.

That looks like a Model 2 monitor which was only rated at 50W. The individual speakers are 8 ohms. Even at 50W they won't last long as guitar speakers.

That would depend on the amp used and how it's played. Using one of the low powered amps popular these days, anywhere from 2-15 watts, they should be fine, even if the amp is cranked all the time. With a higher power amp, up to 60 watts or so, they'd still be fine, so long as the signal is kept clean, as with acoustic guitar.

Put a Beta Lead on them and crank it up, and no, they won't last long.
