can any one recommend speakers in a 215B cab?
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:39:46 am »
I have the chance t opurchase an unloaded sunn (rad and black logo) 215B.  has any one installed speakers that work very well.  I know there are a lot of options and don't want to spend time and money to see which ones may be the best option.  I will be using this cab with a 1200S head.  I am looking for a good sound with plenty of bass.  Eventually, I will be running 2 cabinets at the same time.  please let me know if you have replaced your speakers, or put in any newer speakers with great success.  thanks

That would depend a lot on what kind of sound you want to end up with.

Which 1200S head are you using, the SS Fender era bass amp or the Sundholm era tube amp? Are you playing bass or guitar through it?

IMO K140's would be primo, but may push your budget a little hard. I have a 215S (which I believe is pretty much your 215B dimensionally) loaded with EVML's that I think sounds killer, and if you get lucky you can find a nice pair in your range.
It's my "go to" cab, usually with a a 2000S or a Reeves C225 amp. With the smaller amps I prefer D or K JBL's in a 200S cab.

But, that's my opinion. It's kind of like describing what your favorite food is; extremely subjective.

I've just heard some things about those cabinets not having a very large amount of bass with various speakers.

I would love to find some killer vintage JBL's but budget doesn't allow for that right now.
I'm leaning towards the Emminence Beta 15A's as the yare pretty affordable.

I just want to avoid buying speakers and then having to return them to try something else.  I am assuming that today's modern type speakers may have more benefit that the older type CTS speakers that are getting harder, and harder to find.  thanks

"Just a good classic rock sound"? Any good classic rock sound will do, then? Because the classic Sunn sound is rather different from the Ampeg sound, and both are different from, say, the Acoustic sound.

The Beta 15A has a higher Q than the old JBL drivers, so they'll sound rather different on the low end. Additionally, the Beta 15A also has a big peak in the breakup region, so it will sound brighter, less flat than the old JBL's. Both will sound fine, if you like the way they sound, but they will not sound the same. Which one would suit your sound is something only you can say. For me, the JBL's would suit, but the Beta 15A's would not. YMMV.

I love the original EV speakers in my 215B. Powerful rock tones, move a lot of air, and get pretty deep, bright and twangy all in one string pluck.

Which model EV's were OEM in the 215B? I'm not real savvy on the later Sunn gear.

I'm not entirely sure, at the moment I'm ~500 miles away from my cab, I can check when I get a chance if the OP and you (Ed) really wanna know though.

I'm curious, I would be interested to know if you get a chance to check.

I agree with Ed.  JBL K-140's would give you a killer sound and power handling.  E-140's are really good also..but they weigh more than the K series due to that big ceramic magnet. If I were in your position, I'd buy one K-140 and then save until I could afford another.  Running one JBL with a lesser quality speaker really wouldn't hurt the amp at all...and in the long run when you got the second K-140 you would have a killer cab.
