TRADE: Red Knob Concert Lead for Sovtek MIG 100
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:21:48 pm »
Yeah, I know this is somewhat sacrilege but anyways you get the gist. You got a Sovtek MIG 100 and want a red knob Concert Lead and I've got a red knob Concert Lead and want a Sovtek MIG 100. Just looking for something that's got a good built in drive.

You might want the 2nd version of the MIG's. The first one's (my buddy has one) have no Master volume, but I think the newer ones do.

Really? I never pegged the Betas as having more drive than a Concert Lead. I'll keep that in mind Mike, thanks.

Oh yeah, with the drive turned up just a little these things roar.

I'd go as far as saying the Beta's don't really need pedals at all for bass use.
Guitar is kind of a different story but it definitely beefs things up, may just need a dirt pedal for a little saturation. Either way your RAT's got you covered.

I think stanner's got one he talked about selling in this thread...

Also, have you ever tried running the end of your signal chain straight into the "Power Amp IN" jack?

This defeats the the preamp and from what I've noticed if you turn up the volume of your pedals (if even needed) the amp will definitely be putting out a lot more volume-wise, thus producing a more overdriven tone.

I'd recommend using an EQ or Amp modeling pedal (ala: Tech21) at the end of your chain to help you with the loss of use of your knobs though.

Yeah I was in contact with stanner about his but things didn't work out, he's a little hard to get a hold of and I ended up going home for the holiday weekend we were going to meet.

I'll give that a shot, but really the reason I want the MIG is to get a tube tone, the SS tone is starting to seem kind of dull to me and using just the RAT to create my drive with my Concert Lead is shaky and feedbacky at best.

You'll get a much fuller sound from plugging into the back, essentially, thats what I noticed.
My one Concert Bass started to sound kinda fizzy, so I fig'd what the heck & gave it a shot.
Since then I haven't played one gig plugged into the front of a Concert Bass.

I'm actually testing it right now, and the tone is perfect, the only problem is I don't think I'll get enough volume, the volume on my RAT is at half and it only sounds as loud as if the amp was at 2 or 3 on the volume knob, but I guess if I were to crank it and the volume sweep is accurate then it would be as loud as the amp at 6 which is the average gig volume I use.

EDIT: Actually I can get more than enough volume (living in an on-campus apartment, gotta be mindful) out of the pedal straight into the power amp and best of all it eliminates the buzz that I've got going on in my pre-amp. However, definitely need an EQ pedal as it sounds a bit dull, but this renewed my faith in my amp as I started messing with the settings on my pedal and plugged back into the normal input and I got a better tone than that which I had.

Now we know. I might still be interested in that Beta pre-amp if you've got that still though. Kinda set on getting a MIG 100 for my Concert Lead though, but I'm not in any real hurry, the tone is good enough.
