String Gauge Suggestions
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:11:30 am »
So I've been thinking today, instead of selling my Dan Armstrong to buy two guitars (one for C and one for E,Eb and drop D) I could just find a gauge of string in between heavy for C and light for E. For this I have in mind a set of strings that go .10-.50, does anyone have any experience with this gauge of string in both C and E and can suggest a set?

i recommend SUNN strings for that girthiness everyone raves about.
but c'mon Walt-strings are a way personal thing. you have to experiment and try  to find what suits you as a player-i dont think anyone can tell you what strings to get.
but-hey! thats just me.

I use the new DR Drop Down Tuning strings for bass, using a couple different alternate tunings with low B at the bottom and standard G at the top, and the strings are stable and sonically balanced in this application.  I've heard good things about their guitar strings too (although haven't tried them yet personally) but I'd recommend giving them a shot.

When life gives you lemons, buy amplifiers.

I went bought a pack of DR Pure Blues (.11-.50), didn't do it for me, too tight in E and too loose in C. I think I'm gonna just gonna find a way to get a Gibson The Paul without selling my Dan Armstrong.

if you go for drop D tuning, I would buy a string set your're used to, and swap the low E string with a unit string in bigger guage to keep the same tension in drop D tuning.

I wouldn't recommend going from one tuning to another with the same strings.

perhaps you would need both guitar to have two different fixed tuning set properly?

since I've tuned my baritone drop A, I've bought a 10 pack of baritone light string set 62-13 and a 10 pack of unity 70 string to swap the low B(62=18.2lbs) for a low A(70=18.1lbs).

might get my regular guitar in drop D and do the same math but I know it will stay drop D then.
