Sunn 212LH plans?
« on: March 21, 2011, 10:55:21 am »
I'd really like to build a 212LH and was wondering if anyone has a set of plans for this cabinet? I mean, I can kind of guess to an extent, but the speaker mounting and how the horn is constructed are a kind of a question mark.

Alternately, I'd love to see detailed photos of the insides of one of those cabinets if anyone has anything like that sitting around.

I picked up one of these cabs today. Got it through Guitar Center and it showed up at the local store for pickup today, but had been damaged in transit. First photos here:

Hi RRJackson. I didn't see the cab photo.

I was looking at your faceplate projects. Have you tried a unibit drill for the brass? If not check them out. Because the brass is thin you'd probably need to back it up with some wood for support. Unibit might even work well for the plexiglass (I haven't tried that but I will find a scrap somewhere and try). In either case a slow feed/slow speed would probably work best for minimizing heat and a small pilot hole will keep you on target. What the heck, use a drill press if ya got one.

I haven't tried a unibit. I built a little jig that seems to have solved my problem. I put pins at the four corners and used those metal strips as a frame to hold the panel in place when I drill it. Seems to work pretty well. I'm not going to get on the cover of any engineering journals for figuring out that there's a more precise way than "eyeballin' it," but I'm pretty happy.

BTW, if that panel looks a little askew it's because I flipped it over for the photo. Normally the back of the panel is facing up when it's being drilled. Here's a photo of it.

BTW, I'm liking these cabinets together quite a bit:

there was a discussion earlier on this site about sunn badges and their differences. i have a couple amps w/ the orange color and am convinced they are not faded but the actual color like that cab of yours.

Ah. Interesting. FWIW, it doesn't look to me like this started off as a different color, but it can be hard to tell.
