200s cab build
« on: March 30, 2011, 06:45:30 am »
hey dudes,

my dad and i are going to build a sunn cab and we are almost ready to get started.  I'm wondering if you guys have any thoughts on going smaller and building the 200 or taking the extra few inches and building the 2000s?  the thing is i live in nyc and am gonna have to haul the beast around with my coliseum 300 head.

A smaller package would be better for me physically but i can't help shake the voice saying "might as well jump"

anyone have experience with both?

i play in bands like this

IMHO it doesn't really matter that much.  I've owned both (with their respective heads) and I'd say the sound difference was more down to the head.  The 2000s can sound a bit different than a 200s but again, I'd think that has more to do with the head.  Since you're gonna be mixing and matching heads, diy cabs with non-original speakers etc. I'd go for the smaller of the two cabinets.

I play both, and only rarely do I gig a 2000S cab. Those "extra few inches" you mention make a bunch of difference when it's time to move it around, the 200S isn't exactly a small cab but is a lot easier to move. Most people can pick up a 200S for loading, steps, etc. while a 2000S is usually a two man job; steps, doorways, vehicles, etc. are all a challenge because of it's size.
This pic gives some idea about the difference those few inches make;

Sonically, the cabs are different; even with the same drivers, a 2000S cab sounds bigger than a 200S cab. If it were an all out volume issue I would use the 2000S but for most gig scenarios the 200S (or 215S) makes more sense for me, although it it a blast to play through a full 2000S rig.

awesome man that thing is enormous!

any opinions on front vs. rear loading the speakers?  leaning towards front-loading with a fixed back for added strength.

Wow, I'd never seen a 2000S and a 200S right next to each other like that. Makes the 200S look downright puny!

You can contact Conrad through his website;

http://www.conradamps.com/www.conradamps.com/Welcome.html

I think he sells the plans for Sunn cabs, member D.M.N. bought the plans for a 2000S and built one, it looks and works great.
Front loading the speakers is an exceptionally good idea IMO, taking off and replacing the back on an old Sunn cab is a real pain, even with a power driver.
You also eliminate a potential air leak source. Be sure to allow clearance for mounting the grill cloth though.

Yeah, the differencec in actual dimensions doesn't convey the real world difference between them. As I said, I rarely take 2000S cabs out, and I'm not just a wimp; the logistical problems when moving the cabs is pretty sizeable, particularly if you are gigging regularly. IMO, a tilt back, towel bar SVT 8X10 'fridge is a walk in the park compared to schlepping 2000S cabs around.

we're going with the 200s for sure.  i think we're going to keep the back panel removable so i can tolex without a seam, unless you guys have any tips for that?  This will be my first attempt.

we're going to make some modifications to the handle and caster system

instead of four casters on the floor we are going to use two of these on the back bottom

two of these handles on the top of the back to move it around like a hand truck

and four of these handles, one on each side and two on the bottom for two-man carry scenarios

i'm leaning towards this grill cloth, black and gold is my jam

and this tolex

whadda you think?

should be getting started on cutting wood tonight.
you got it dude

Pretty fancy! I can see why you wouldn't want to try to line of a seam in that tolex...
Good luck, and keep us posted, a lot of us love the DIY stuff.

Yeah, I built a 2000s cab last summer with my old man, and we're probably going to do another one coming up pretty soon (spring/beginning of summer). I went ahead and did the 2000s partially because....well, what the hell, why not? It's big and impressive and awesome. I also chose the 2000s design because I A) planned on getting a 2000s amp (which I now have), and B) my Bassman 300 wouldn't have fit on top of a 200s cab. We bought the plans from Conrad and they also came with a parts sheet. Beware, though, that there's a few discrepancies, so my cab actually came out at 30.5 or 31" across. It's not that much of a difference really, just confusing. Ask away if you come across it, I can't remember exactly what it is at the moment. I backloaded my cabinet, as per Conrad's instructions and the original cabs, but it's kind of a personal choice, doesn't really matter either way. I like the mods you're going with, and I'll be honest, I though about those type of casters myself. HOWEVER, you'll probably have to make some design mods to the plans, as the back panel of the cabinet goes all the way down to the bottom, and you'd need to shorten that panel and make the part of the lower back non-removable to use those. I also seriously considered that paisley tolex, and marshall grill. However, I'll eventually go the traditional Sunn route so that it matches my 2000s and will match my redressed Bassman 300. As it is now, I've stained it in a deep walnut, and bought an American flag from the hardware store to use as a grill. Here's a tip: if you can get ahold of a Festool, it will make your life 5000x easier. We laid out, checked our measurements, and ripped all the pieces of the cab in an hour and a half. Piecing it all together probably took 45 minutes, and then it set for a good 6 hours. It's a really simple cab design, fun if you're just getting into it. Any questions, feel free to ask. Here's a few shots of mine:

Man that was quick! I assume you've been reading Greg_M's project thread;

If not, I'll bet you can come up with some great hints there.
