Vintage Sunn 2000S Head & Cabinet - $2950 (Seattle)

Late '60s Sunn 2000S and original matching cabinet (2 x 15-inch JBLs) in outstanding condition. This 120-watt tube amp (with four 6550 power tubes) is super clean: no rips, tears, bumps, or bruises, just age-related discoloration and staining to the grill cover (which could be replaced if you really care about having a museum piece). The amp was completely checked out, recapped, and retubed by Aviator Audio in Shoreline and has zero hours on it since then. I'm only selling because I need the space in my small house -- the cabinet alone is up to my chest -- and because I realize this monster isn't the most practical rig for a 56-year-old bass player. If you've ever lusted after Sunn's top-of-the-line bass amp (this amp cost $2K in 1969), you won't find one in better condition than this one.

Oh yeah: I've got a first-generation (silver knob) Sunn Model T in the same condition (without the cabinet), also completely checked out, recapped, and retubed by Aviator Audio, for $2150. And a 1968 Fender Bassman (Silverface with the drip-edge trim) with original cabinet and covers (recapped, retubed, etc.) in sparkling museum condition for $1850. I found the exact same rig in pretty much the same condition for $1000.  Matching 2x15 cab and all.  He'll never get that amount.

Ya, I bought it back in August.  The guy listed it at $1200 and took $1000 for it.  He said he got it in some old lady's basement in non working condition.  Had it completely gone over, all the regular maintenance done to it, now it's good to go for another 40 years.

Want to hear the kicker?   He bought it for $100!!!  crazy.

I would sell it for $1500 but I live in Canada so I imagine shipping for this beast would be at least $500...  probably not worth it.  I'd also trade straight up for a 1st gen Model T.  I'm a guitar player but couldn't pass up the 2000s.  Seeing pictures on the net is one thing, but seeing this monster in person is mind blowing.  It's huge!   Sweet amp for sure, just a little too quiet for my liking.

Oooh, that Seattle one is SOOO close, but yes, it's overpriced. I Bought my head for $850 with the original tubes (worth a good amount on their own) and built my cab, speakers and all for maybe $500. So that's a bit too high, even for the condition it's in. However, I have to say, it seriously ups its cool point with the original style grill cloth. Very cool.

Up in Canada Madaradio? Where abouts? I'm pretty near Canada, I'm be willing to make you an offer if you ever get the urge to sell it. Is it the one that was posted over on harmony central or The Gear Page with the blue strat in the picture?

I'm in Ontario about 45 minutes from the Minnesota border.  about 3.5 hours from Duluth MN.  No, not on harmony central.  I'm not actively trying to sell it, but if everything lined up i'd consider it.  Like I said, I'm a guitar player, and even though it's a sweet amp, I don't use it nearly enough.

There was a guy a year or so ago that found a Model T (1st gen) at a pawn shop for $150. Was just missing the fuse. He bought it.

Let's see....this guy is selling a minty early grill 2000S rig that's been his and maintained for 40 years or so....but you have "the exact same rig in much the same condition" that was found non-working in an old basement for $1,000.

Yeah, that sounds like an apples-to-apples comparison.

well, I pretty much follow the sunn market on a day to day basis, and going from that he'll never get what he's asking.  Im not saying im an expert but there is a limit to what the market will handle, and this is way past that limit.

I think the 2000S (particularly with the correct cab(s)) market is way too small for anyone the claim absolutes. There weren't all that many of them in the first place, and the sheer size of them pretty much restricts the market range. As they say in retail; location, location, location...
As with anything (like the Model T) there will be highs and lows; top dollar sales and "steals". BUT unlike the currently trendy Model T's the 2000S values seem to increase substantially when the 2000S head is paired with a proper (and shipping restrictive) cab while that doesn't seem to matter too much to the Model T's buyers.

As far as $2950, it seems that the ad has been taken down so it has resolved itself one way or the other, and while there is no way of knowing for sure, but after only being up for four days one would think that it sold.
 
On a side note; IMO based on the descriptions the 2000S rigs that broiler has on this site for sale are more than fair at $2K, and would be long sold if they happened to be in the same place as a serious buyer. I've considered the logistics of going to get them myself, and I already have multiple 2000S rigs.
