Identify unknown cab
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:26:22 pm »
This is located near me, but I've never seen this cab.  Any ideas?  Tolex, handle, corners and grill cloth look (at least in the pics) like Sunn.  2-12 subwoofers?  They look like they have duct tape on them.  Oh well, thanks for any info.   :-) http://charlotte.craigslist.org/msg/2348474370.html

I was mystified when I saw this, too. But your question prompted me to look at my catalog stash and sure enough in 1969 the Solarus and Sonaro combo units were split into head-cab combinations. (Each was still a one-piece combo in 1968.) "Highly desirable for club and recording work, Solarus' total sound is achieved by combining state-of-the-art circuitry with two superb Sunn Guitar Transducers in an open back cabinet." The Solarus cab, 24w by 29h by 11.5d, had two 12" "heavy duty Sunn Guitar Transducers with heat treated voice coils."

And that sure does look like duct tape on those speakers!

Yes,that's a Solarus 2 x 12",(on it's side).They are the same size as the Sonaro 1 x 15" cab,just a different baffle board and a full back instead of the 2 panels.

Thanks Carter and McA.  After seeing your info, I figured it might be worth at least looking at since it's so close.  Hope to see it Thursday or Friday.  I talked to the guy and he has an amp, but only a mic to check it out.  I'm guessing that's why it sounds good to him even with the duct tape.  We'll see.   :-)

BTW you can see where the old Sunn logo used to be attached to the grill. Nice repair on the drivers.

Well, it was either duct tape or WD-40. He probably figured the WD-40 would be too messy ...  :-D

When I was 15 I decided to build a couple of PA cabs to go along with an old Bogan PA amp that I had.  I saved my money ( $1.00 an hour - Guess what year that was!) and built two cabinets with two 12" Sunn PA speakers in each.  I showed up at our first band practice anxious to use our PA System and to my horror my Bass player had sprayed WD40 all over the cones to make them "Move" easier.  Next practice we had a new Bass player!

Carter - maybe if a heat gun were used to dry the WD40, the messy part would be greatly reduced.  :?

Johnny G - that's too funny.  I suppose that between duct tape and WD40, everything can be fixed.
