I just acquired a near mint PL-20 Beta Preamp with original green instruction manual. I'm a little confused. Is this thing meant to be used on its own, or with like a Beta Lead which I also have? I don't want to hook it up wrong so as to see smoke coming from it...

Maybe you should read, understand and follow the instruction manual.

And when you do, sunnyd, you'll discover that a preamp is to be used with a power amp.
