Sunn Magna 184 15" Speakers?
« on: August 25, 2011, 02:31:53 pm »
Hey guys,

I recently bought some replacement 15" speakers. the weird thing about them is they are indeed 15"'s (and a bit) yet they have 184 stickers on them. According to the info I dug up, 184's should be 18". Has any one ever come across 15's with 184 stickers?

I've never seen that anomaly, but such deviations seemed to happen regularly at Sunn, particularly in the early Hartzell era.
Are you sure they are actually Sunn speakers? Those labels could have been stuck on just about anything, and I'm not "Magna" era experienced enough to identify the drivers by sight without the labels.

EdBass - I was wondering the same thing. If that is the case, the person did an exceptional job at removing the stickers and applying them to these particular speakers. I tried to see if I could get even a corner up but these things are on there for good. I'd have to rip the whole thing off in tiny pieces. I highly doubt they were taken off the real deals and applied to the speakers I purchased. Unless the person had a roll of unused 184 stickers lying around...

That being said, I am not sure these are Sunn speakers. I was told they were, but that is exactly what I'm trying to figure out.

Isaac - Nice! Other than the back plate, these look quite different. The frame is most obvious. What kind of cab did you find those in?

Just did an internet search for Magna photos.

I think you nailed it Mel! I bet you anything hiding under those Magna stickers is a Cerwin Vega sticker. I can actually see a very similar outline under the Magna sticker. The speaker also has a redish (now beige) surround. I should have posted pics of the other side! It seems I'm not the only one with a Cerwin Vega/Sunn combo:

Question is, was this done by Sunn or is there a very particular speaker counterfeiter on the loose?!

Edit:
Look familiar?

This is how they were when I got them. From what I was told, these came stock straight out of an old 115 cab...

Well, it’s obvious that those are not the right labels for the speakers they are on. Cerwin Vegas were the high end upgrade driver for Sunn in that era, so they had not only the Magna labels but also Vegas around, and speaker label hijinks were not unprecedented; note the labels on my Sceptre cab.

Also, IMO a counterfeiter relabeling a Cerwin Vega driver as a Sunn Magna makes about as much sense as rebadging a vintage Fender as a Peavey.

I’d say it’s just another Sunn factory anomaly. If I were you though, I would absolutely have to find out what they actually are!

According to the info I dug up, 184's should be 18".
From what I've seen of these labels the first two numbers indicate size, the next number(s) indicate ohms. Yours indicate 4 ohms. Is that the case? A 15" 16Ω would read 1516. Maybe they were out of ththe right label that particular day and thought impedance might be more important to indicate than size. Who knows?

edit: oops I see that this info was recently posted. oh well..
