Black Keys
« on: December 06, 2011, 10:25:56 am »
Did anybody see Saturday Night Live this past week on Dec 3, 2011? A Band named Black Keys played and the bass player had what looked like a 2000S (or 350B) and a 1000S (or 350L).

The Youtube vid seemes to be down, but I saw the performance and it was pretty cool. I think he could have got a much better tone than he did, but that's a personal taste thing!  :-D

Yes, why not? I'm not sure of the quality of digital broadcast audio where you live but NBC's multi channel Dolby Digital broadcast audio through my home system is pretty good. I'm fairly sure SNL's digital audio broadcast feed is the same as the live studio audio.
I personally thought he sounded a little "snarky" and thin. Probably what he wanted it to sound like; since he used obsolete gear instead of sponsored backline gear I would imagine he takes his tone pretty seriously.

Of course, he might not like my tone either.
See, that's the thing about tone, it's a personal taste thing. Kinda like your favorite food...

I looked through many of the pictures on their website and there are only a couple where you can see the Sunn rig. He's probably still searching for the sound he wants.

No doubt! Of course I think for most of us that's a quest akin to Diogenes' search for an honest man...  :-D

They did have some pretty cool, obscure vintage gear on stage for the SNL performance. And, I will also mention that they were one of the few musical guests appearing on the show in the past few years that I actually liked!

And most of us are happy with a certain sound but we want the other sound too. I love my Sunn gear but I will not let the next "Portaflex" get away.

A couple of years ago, a friend had a spare ticket to see them. This was back in the days when they were a two-piece (no bassist).

I listened to as much as myspace had to offer, but wasn't at all impressed with their sound (I found out later that they record using analogue, not digital equipment, as do many others seeking that Lo-fi sound).

However the guitarist's sound live was something to behold. No idea how he does it, but any tone enthusiast would appreciate that live sound!
