2 Sunn Model T, but its different
« on: December 24, 2011, 09:14:15 am »
Hi, I have a question, I have two Model T V1. One of 1975 and 1974. The two have been revised it is the same tubes and the same components.

But it sounds radically different from one another. Do you know why? Can you help me?

Stanner, ever think that English might not be his first language? Instead of complaining about it why not re-read it a few times or just don't even reply.

not complaining RotGut-if you re read! :-) i said "please'. can you answer his question or re phrase for me? if he's saying two Ts sound different w/ same tubes/components-I would answer 'they all do'. there is much written on the web about the difference between redknob and silver/blackknob. but if englaise is not his front language...

Hi Clodo. I understand you to say that both are version 1 (1st generation) model T's (without the mid select switch) with same components but they sound different. Have they both been thoroughly serviced with new filter and bias capacitors, potentiometers and jacks checked and cleaned, etc? Have new tubes been installed and biased and are they the same brand and type? Are you comparing them using the same settings, same speaker cabinet, same guitar and same ohm setting? In other words are you comparing apples to apples? If so and they still sound different keep the better one and send the other to me. I will waive my normal disposal fee and recycle it for you. :-D
Perhaps one of them has been modified in the past or has a failing cap or resistor. Maybe a dirty jack. Weak transformer. Several things could add up so they really need to be checked out after you have covered all the simple things.
I just put new KT88's in a 1st gen, biased it and rebiased my 2nd gen (6550's) so I did some side by side comparison. I didn't get too crazy loud and they sounded very similar to my tin ear. Both very nice although some might say they are inclined to be rather rude if their knobs are twiddled.
Here's some amp porn.

One is 6550 and the second KT88.

These tubes sound pretty different from each other.  If you prefer one amp over the other, I would put those kind of tubes in the other amp too and see if the sound improves for you.  Make sure you have a tech do this if you don't know how to bias etc.
When life gives you lemons, buy amplifiers.

Hi, I did a test. I reversed the tube amplifier on the amplifier 2. I bias. I found that the problem is not the tubes. I go to a technician Friday.

I'll keep you informed
