Sunn Studio PA solid state
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:01:30 pm »
Hi all,  my first post.  I've searched the web for info but am having a difficult time finding info on this PA I have.

It's an old Sunn Studio PA - solid state - that I used back in High School, and I used it with a couple of Sunn Model 2 speakers 16ohm/50W rated.  Problem is I can't find what the power rating of the power amp is, or what impedence the power amp expects to see.  I don't know if these speakers actually match the amp - it's just what I had at the time and I never played it too loud.  Mostly used to run a keyboard, drum machine, and 4-track through it in the basement where I lived.  A couple of the photos include the back of the amp/PA if it helps.  If anyone knows or can point me to specs on this I'd appreciate.    Thanks very much in advance.  I'm kindof wondering what it might sound like with a different cab attached (for guitar/bass), but don't want to damage anything.

Here are pics of what I have

Your two 16 ohm speakers combine to form an 8 ohm load. Can't go wrong with that. I'd hesitate putting a 4 ohm load on it without more information. I think 4 ohms would be okay, but if that's wrong, the amp blows and that's never good.

The Studio PA is 50W at 4 ohms like the Studio Lead and Studio Bass of the same era.

Thanks for the replies, appreciated.

So if I understand correctly - I take it from the replies that each speaker out is not independent, but is parallel - so that 2 16ohms in parallel presents 8 ohm load to amp - regardless of whether they're plugged into the 2 jacks in back of the amp, or if they were chained together from amp to speaker1, and then speaker 1 to speaker 2?  (or am I misunderstanding?)  I guess what I'm getting to is whether it matters if both speakers are plugged directly into the amp or are chained in parellel to each other?

If I understand I could hypothetically put a single 8 ohm 4x10 cabinet and should be OK still presenting amp with 8ohm resistance.  Similarly 2 8ohm cabs would get me down to 4ohm but still should be OK?

I appreciate your responses.  I've tried to google to understand how the speakers add together (I'm a guitar guy and my amps tend to just have one output on the back LOL), but backing into the math it sounds like it may not matter if I use both outputs on the amp as long impedence is matched - or am I completely misunderstanding?  thank you

Sounds as though you understand perfectly, but I'll recap anyway, just in case.

There is only one power amp. The speaker jacks are parallel, so it doesn't matter which one you plug into, and daisy chaining from one is essentially the same as plugging into both. One 8 ohm cabinet would be fine, as would two,  or one 4 ohm cabinet.
