JBL in sunn cabs

Hi All, Can anyone tell me some of the main
differences of 15" JBLs used in sunn cabs. I see The following a lot:

JBL 130F
JBL 140D

I saw a thread somewhere on this site but I think it addressed Sunn Magna that were used
Which are best used in the Bass Cabs in case I have to load up any empty cabinet?

In simplest terms, the 130 was the guitar speaker and the 140 was the bass speaker.

Look through the 1968 brochure on this site to see how they were used.

There is also a thread in the forum which gives some history on the specific speakers used at various times.

The JBL web site has some interesting historical data on these speakers. They are still highly prized today and vintage speakers in good condition command premium prices. There is some belief, at least by some JBL employees that the vintage, alnico F series remain superior to current E or later series.

D 130- for guitar
 D 140-for bass
long out of production, but if you have some that are blown or"dry rotted" you can get them reconed.just be sure the speaker tech uses a jbl factory recone kit,not a cheaper substitute. these spkrs had alnico (aluminum,nickel+cobalt) magnets which gave them a distintive sound.the newer E-130+E-140 spkrs have ceramic magnets for better power handeling and they also sound great .you can argue w/ someone for hours over which ones are  better.                           check out http://www.jblpro.com

I thought that, at my age, I'd be fairly well-versed in the ways of older Sunn/JBL pairings, but I find such not to be the case. I just bought a 15" JBL E-140-8 that someone recently suggested was NOT a musical instrument (specifically bass) speaker, but something made for a car stereo system.  Can this be true???

I also just picked up on a 'like-new' 200S WITH the 2x15 cabinet - upon opening the back, I find 2 JBL D15S Signature Series speakers that even JBL can't tell me about.  Anyone have any insights into these anomalies?

I've got a couple D15's in one of my rigs. Just had them reconed with D140 kits. All I've been told is that D15 was a "pro" version of the D140, identical except for a black instead of gray frame.

Thanks, Bill - I did some surfing last night and discovered that a lot of folks use them as guitar speakers, as well as bass.  It sounds like I scored!
