JBL D-15S speakers, what are they?
« on: December 03, 2001, 03:54:00 pm »
Just bought a near mint '69 Sunn Sentura and matching 2-15 cab. I took the back off the cab to find 2) D-15S speakers. They look identical to 130/140's except that they're black. I have been searching for info about these speakers here and haven't found anything that I would consider definitive.

So what's the deal with these things, are they just black 130/140's? Or are they an economy version? And if they are virtual 130/140's, which one? The 130 is a guitar speaker, the 140 a bass speaker. Can you play either instrument through either speaker without a compromise in performance?

Well gene, I think I can help you with that. Apparently, you are unaware that the JBL
D-130/D-140 came in black, and, in fact, the 1969 models were black. And, as the speakers in your '69 cabinet are black it is a fair guess that they are identical to the stock JBL D-130/D-140, apart from the change of label.

Further, I would assume that since this is a guitar cabinet, that what you have is the D-130, which is the full-range driver. If it were the D-140 it would likely be diminished in the high end (aka treble), or otherwise weighted toward bottom-ness, like that Altec bass driver you own. But I don't know that for for sure.

I'll see what other info I can find for you.

Keep on shinin', sunn.
