Cryo Treated tubes or not?
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:53:38 pm »
Hello all,
About to buy a backup pair of KT88's  and invite your opinions and experiences with cryo vs non cryo tubes.

Thanks

I think tube differences are overblown. A small tweak of a tone control will usually make more difference in the sound than any change in tubes.

+3 ^^.

I have never used the cyro tubes, but that is because I think it is a bunch of malarkey.

Yea, after surfing around on this tube forum and that bass forum, the concensus seems to be it's a bunch of hooey.

Pros - they are better at being matched and less likely to fail.

Cons - no science behind it and no evidence to back the claims.

It cam up for me, because I suddenly find myself facing costs I hadn't expected, and Cryo claims to last longer and be more dependable, so I wanted to float it to the experts and see what you guys thought.

NOW i'm down to J/J's vs Svetlana winged C's

In the 200S I used to own, I ran a pair of JJ KT88's for 7 years, and sold it and that guy still uses them most likely too. They sound great and last a long time though I would usggest to get the JJ tubes from someone like Eurotubes who screens them and weeds out the bad stuff before it gets to you. They also match them up well with their methods. You pay a little more for that service but it is worth it. I have a 2000S that needs a rebuild and it will get a qua d of JJ KT88's when I get around to rebuilding it.

I used to run a sextet of Svetlana/Winged C 6550C's in my old Ampeg SVT that I sold last year. Those tubes sounded and performed great for over 10 years.....but the Svetlana factory in St. Pertersburg Russia that has always made Svetlana/Winged C tubes decided to stop receiving tube production last year. All the types that go into guitar and bass amps are considered receiving tubes. So what that means for you is that Winged C are going up in price since they are likely the best quality tubes that were being made in the modern era.....

That said, you can't go wrong with either choice...they both are good. I personally like the JJ's in my Sunn gear.

I've been happy with JJ's from Eurotubes. Two caveats, though:

I'm not a tone freak, so maybe my opinion doesn't count for much.

I haven't tried a lot of different tubes. They're expensive, and, as I said, I'm not a tone freak.
