mid 70's 610 cab

Aloha,

   I have an oppurtunity to check out a mid 70's 610 cabinet.Not certain if it is a 610L or 610M,but what I was wondering if there is a way for me to determine, that is with out removing the rear panel that the drivers are the standard transducers or the upgraded magna tranducers.I plan on using this cabinet for bass along with my 215S cabinet.

   Well I checked out the cab and its a 610S,they guy had rewired the cab. and after testing both input jacks not all the drivers were properly hooked up.So I am going to think about it.

What makes you say that all the drivers were not properly hooked up?

There may be a lot of screws on the back, but it may be worth it to hook them up properly and see what you have running in there.

      Well for one  thing while playing through one of the two inputs on the cab some of the drivers were more predominate then the others.While in the other input it was almost the opposite.This was a front loaded cabinet.I did however remove and inspect one of the drivers and did a cone check for any rubbing.I was not aware of this but apparently the 610S is a stereo cab.

It was not a stereo cabinet as made by Sunn. If the input makes any difference, it's been rewired. I don't think that's a very good idea. All of the drivers are in the same interior volume, so running it stereo means that half of the drivers will be acting as passive radiators for the other half. Even worse, if you run an amp into both inputs, then the drivers powered by one amp will cause the other drivers to induce a voltage, feeding it into the output of the other amp. Might let the magic smoke out...

You are absolutely right it is not a stereo cab.And I don't know why I did not notice this earlier,but in both my Sunn catalog's from 72 & 74 have the 610S (retail price was 329.00).There is some history behind this cabinet,apparently this cab was used at Lahaina Sound which was  George Bensons old studio on Maui.If I do decide to buy the cab,I will probably replace the drivers,since I planning on coupling it with my 215S for bass.

and just how do you propose to replace the drivers without letting the magic smoke out?

    Well my plan was to replace the drivers with 4 4ohm and 2 8ohm  drivers.And wiring the the 4 ohm drivers in series and then wired  in parallel with 8 ohm drivers in series. But alas due to my procrastination the cabinet was sold,but the same seller also had a 215S with D-130's,not my preference for drivers but oh well so I picked that up from him.

There is a good possibility that I may do just that.I would like to either replace them with D 140's or EV 15B's.In my other 215 cabinet I have 421-8H's.

I think that EVM 15L's are actually better than  B's for bass. If you're driving the cabinet with anything greater than 150 watts or so, the EV's will hold up better and bottom out less than the JBL's or the Altecs you mentioned in your post.

You know I once had a EV 215B cab. and if I am not mistaken it had 15L's.I loved that cab.,but it was real pain to move because of its width.I also once had a Sunn 412 that I loaded with EV 12L's that I paired with my 215s.
