Beta Lead 2x12 Combo Impedence??
« on: November 23, 2007, 03:57:40 pm »
I want to use a cab with this, and i'm thinking about building a 1x18, but i cant find the speaker impedence to know how much more it can handle besides the speakers its mounted with.  Does anyone know what the impedence of the stock speakers are?  Thanks

I'll confirm tomorrow when I'm back with my Beta, but I'm pretty sure its two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. Again, I'll check tomorrow when I get back from Thanksgiving break.

As for what else it can handle, it says on the jacks on the back, if I remember correctly its 4 ohms.

You're correct on both accounts. I personally use a Fender Sunn 4x12, along with the combo speakers. Usually, just the 4x12, though. The 2x12 is way too loud!

so it'd be safe to run another 8ohms along with the stock speakers?  holy crap, thats the most excited i've been all week.

Yep, I would say so.

And TGH, you're right - just the 2x12 is quite loud - I've never had a problem being heard over a drummer, and I've played with one who I swear buys sticks by the PALLET because he hits so hard.

is there any danger running 2 200w 16 ohm 4x12 cabinets off the beta lead with the stock speakers.  the ohms i get, the wattage confuses me.  it says "4 ohms 100w max" off the back of the lead.  i just want the loud, not the sound of exploding amps, know what i mean?

thanks

First, an amplifier doesn't give a rat’s ass how many watts the speakers attached to it are rated for. All it cares about is the impedance to current flow the speaker presents to it.

The relationship between impedance (measured in ohms) and wattage are simple with solid state amps. The higher the impedance, the less current the amp will flow.
Imagine a water faucet; wide open it represents very little impedance to the water flow (like a 4 ohm load on your beta), and half open it represents roughly twice the impedance to water flow as a wide open valve (like your beta with an 8 ohm load). The amount of water that comes out at different levels of impedance (as in impede; to retard in movement or progress by means of obstacles or hindrances; obstruct; hinder.) is a crude example of the work force, measured in “watts”, that your amp will produce.
The only real danger is showing the amp a load so low in impedance that it becomes unstable, that’s when you get to experience the cool, but costly sound of exploding amps.

With solid state amps, it doesn’t matter what the impedance is as long as it’s not too low. In the case of your beta, it’s rated at 100 watts with a 4 ohm load. What that label is telling you is; “If you go below a 4 ohm load, you’re on your own. Stand at a safe distance”. Anything higher will work just fine, but as your impedance climbs, you are in effect “shutting your water valve”, and less current will flow. With an 8 ohm load the beta probably makes 60 watts or so, and so on.

By the way, except for “an amplifier doesn't give a rat’s ass how many watts the speakers attached to it are rated for. All it cares about is the impedance to current flow the speaker presents to it.”,

NONE OF THE ABOVE IS RELEVANT TO VACUUM TUBE AMPS.

okay, so it doesnt matter what the speakers are as long as it doesnt go down to 2 ohms, or have an impedence than the amp isn't rated for.  unfortunatly my budget doesnt allow for a sufficient tube amp, but will running a solid-state at full volume be bad, i assume the amp is built to play at full, like a car engine is meant to run constantly, but i heard somewhere if you are constantly running it past 8 on the dial this can be bad news.

Yes and no. It doesn't matter what the speakers are as long as their total impedance doesn't go below the amp minimum - which in the case of the beta is 4 ohms, not two.

There is no "special reason" you can't run a solid state amp at full volume, as long as the speaker load is at or above the minimum rated load.

Whatever you heard about "8 on the dial" must have been about tube amps.

awesome.  and yeah, 4 ohms, i meant in terms of if i go to 2 ohms i'd be super fucked.  so basically, stay above 4 ohms and get speakers rated higher than 100 watts and rock out.
