Help me identify this SUNN cabinet
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:08:35 am »
I picked up this Beta Lead head and 4x12 cabinet last week. Someone told me they think the cabinet is either a bass or PA cab.

It's a Sunn 402, and it's a few inches deeper than the Beta head.

So, what is it? If it's a PA cab, is it safe to play a bass through it?

The 402 is for guitar or bass, 1979 catalog doesn't say. The PA cabinets in those years were called Model 1, Model 2... etc.

the guitar is an Electrical Guitar Company Standard Model, all aluminum.

Someone told me that they made different model 402's. It's kind of confusing, so I came here looking for a definitive answer.

all aluminum?  neck and head stock too?  solid body?  semi hollow?  I've never seen anything like it.  how's it sound?  do you like it and what type of music do you play?

I'm interested in this too, I've seen more and more bands using these, Torche, ISIS, among others. What's so unique about the sound? Seems like a neat concept. Ive seen pictures of their painted ones or the ones with some wood on them and they look pretty cool too.

Yes, Torche and Isis, Melvins, Steve Albini and others are playing EGC guitars. It sounds great - has an extra bite/resonance. The body and neck are milled out of solid aluminum. The body is 2 halves - top and bottom.

My new favorite guitar!

Now, back to cabinet identification!

i have the same cab.  and it will work fine for both guitar or bass.  as long as you stay within the correct ohms and watts.

how much was that guitar?  i've been checking them out and am very interested in buying one (as big black is one of my favorite bands.).

oh, and as for the cabinet, I was figuring out trying a bass through the Beta Lead head.
