200s bass head +cab

I have a 200S amp with the serial #1982 and a matching cabinet with two 15" JBL SPEAKERS. It looks old and has a date from a previous owner written in the cabinet of 1/7/69. I am asking if anyone has any info about it.. it sounds awsome and is really clean. Maybe some insight to the age, wattage, any tips..anything is helpful. thanks.

The 200S is, IMHO, the best sounding bass amp on the planet.....period. I use one for recording and just love the tone. For those of you who might be too young to remember, this amp was THE choice of most top bass players back in the late sixties and early seventies. I'll dig out my SUNN catalog for you in a few minutes and post all of the specs on the 200S for you.

I agree with Sunnboy 100%.  I owned one new in 1969 and it was the best sounding bass amp ever made.  The bigger 2000s is also awesome, but the 200S smaller box is tighter.  I used borrow a freinds and play gyms with two bottoms,  WOW!!!  I'm almost temped to get another one, they're around. When I saw the Daed at the Fillmore East, Lesh had four Fender Showman Heads on top of four 200S boxes! and when I saw Mountain around 1971, Felix had about a dozen 200S cabs stacked up.  Another popular setup which I saw was Berry Oakly (Allmans) use was SVT heads with 2000S boxes!  I saw Suire with Yes and Entwhistle too also use use Sunn boxes.. Seemed like all the pros used them (or occasionally acoustic 360's) back then!!!Then Sunn solid state and that was the end of their reputation!

The 200S is a 60 watt all tube head. It was influenced by the Dyna 60 watt ultra linear amp of that period. The transformers and filter caps used in the 200S were built for the Dyna.
I put the 200S on a frequency sweep and found that the treble control REALLY pushes up the treble response. I've always like this head with the treble turned down to around 2 to 4.
It uses a 12AX7 preamp tube and a 6AN8A phase inverter and a pair of either KT88s or later 6550s. The 200S used a GZ34 rectifier. When that was changed to a solid state rectifier, the model was called a 190B.
Many of these early Sunn heads came with Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7s, Mullard GZ34s and either Genelex KT88s or Tung-Sol 6550s!
What amp manufacturer these days would put that kind of quality in their product line?
